Project 20|20 – Week 10: I Really Need This Today

On my week 9 blog, Recycling Reality, I talked about the importance of paying attention and adjusting what and how we think. Life is full of stuff we do not control. Information is everywhere about coronavirus, and we need to mind how much it is useful to take in.

COVID-19 may be out there, but we control how much it can get into our thoughts. 

We have the power to control our minds by choosing the way we see life. That is directly connected to the level of happiness we create for ourselves as we face day-to-day challenges. 

These are different times. It requires unique methods. 

What I do can affect millions

I Really Need This Today

Every answer is inside of us, but many times there is so much noise that we cannot hear it. 

To be able to listen to our inner selves, we need to silence our minds of all the multiple sources of input that we are exposed to every day. When we don’t pay attention and control our thoughts, our brain can turn into a street fair, full of people talking, screaming, trying to walk in different directions, and bumping into each other. In one word, chaos. If you have ever been to an open market in Brazil, you will understand what I mean. 

Many times, we spend too much time wishing for what is left behind us and grieving about what tomorrow brings. One of the reasons, maybe, is that we are not comfortable with where, and who we are.

One of CDC’s latest guidelines is to avoid being exposed to the coronavirus, and some of us have government measures in place to stay at home. For some of us that may mean introspection which can be hard. That said it can be a wonderful opportunity to find out who we really are. 

Start Here 

Self-discovery is a long journey, but like any other, it starts with the first step. Anyone can start wherever they are; it requires no secret sauces or magic. We just need to be an observer of our thoughts.

While I can give you my perspective, each one of us deals with uncertainty in a different way. But it takes a lot of courage to face our deepest fears, and it may take years to find all the answers, but we have time.

Remember, there is no right or wrong way to get to know yourself. You may turn in different directions and fine-tune the suggestions I am giving. Nevertheless, make life choices today that will make you happier in the future. You will be living with yourself every minute of your life.

I recommend the following actions this week:

  • With no judgment, pay attention to how many times during the day you think or use positive words when referring to yourself.
  • With no judgment, pay attention to how many times during the day you think or use negative words when referring to yourself.
  • Identify this week something about yourself that pushes people away. How does it make you feel? How can you apply compassion to you and others in this situation?
  • Identify this week something about yourself that connects you with others. How does it make you feel? Can you find opportunities to do more of what makes you happy?
  • At the end of each day, write down how you spend your hours. How does it make you feel?

After that, look for moments this week that you felt whole and content. This is super important: we need to nurture our souls with love, compassion, and joy. These are the medicines of the soul.

Continuing where we left on week 9:

  • Continue to list your blessings every day this week. That will help you immensely.
  • Be a loving listener to yourself. Everyday.
  • Use compassion. To everyone.
